The US Citizen Edition
Vol. 10 — For US Corporate Travelers, Founders & HR Managers
The 1-year multiple-entry Business Visit Visa, the documents the embassy actually checks, the 2026 processing times, and the line you cannot cross without converting to a Saudi work visa.
Direct answer. US citizens cannot use the Saudi Tourist e-Visa for business meetings, contract signing or commercial activity — that requires a Business Visit Visa. The most useful variant is the 1-year multiple-entry Business Visa, which lets American executives, founders and sales teams enter Saudi Arabia repeatedly for up to 90 days per stay. Issued by the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Washington DC (or the consulates in New York, Los Angeles or Houston), it requires a Saudi inviting entity, a notarized invitation letter, a Chamber of Commerce-attested cover letter from the US employer, and a clean passport with at least six months validity. Processing in 2026 averages 5–10 business days for the e-Visa variant and 10–20 business days for traditional consular processing. The visa permits meetings, negotiations, conference attendance and contract signing — but not paid delivery of work in Kingdom. For that, a Saudi work visa with Iqama is required.
01 · The visa class
Why US citizens need a Business Visit Visa for any commercial activity in Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia opened the Tourist e-Visa to US citizens in 2019. It is fast, online, and 90-day multiple-entry — and many US travelers assume it covers a quick business trip. It does not. The Tourist e-Visa permits tourism, family visits and Umrah; it explicitly excludes commercial activity. A US citizen who attends a contract meeting, a board sitting or a vendor pitch on a tourist visa is in breach of visa conditions, and Saudi immigration tracks the purpose of repeated entries.
The correct visa for any meeting, negotiation, exhibition or contract signing is the Business Visit Visa, issued by the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on the back of an invitation from a registered Saudi entity. Three variants exist in 2026: single-entry (30 or 90 days), 1-year multiple-entry (the workhorse for US corporate travelers), and 5-year multiple-entry (issued sparingly, usually to executives with a documented commercial track record in the Kingdom).
For founders and sales teams without a Saudi entity, Tamra issues Business Visit Visa invitations under our MISA licence — the standard route for US firms exploring the market before incorporating.
02 · The documents
The seven-document set the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in DC requires from US citizens.
US citizens applying through the Saudi Embassy in Washington DC (or the New York, Los Angeles or Houston consulates) submit via VFS Tasheel. The document set is consistent across posts:
1. US passport with at least six months remaining validity from the date of intended entry, and two blank visa pages.
2. Enjazit application printout — the online Saudi visa application, completed in English, with a passport-style photograph uploaded.
3. Saudi inviting company's invitation letter with the MOFA-issued invitation reference number (a 16-digit code). This is the single most important document; without it the application is dead on arrival.
4. US employer's cover letter on company letterhead, signed by an authorized signatory, stating the purpose of the trip, dates, and financial responsibility — attested by the local US Chamber of Commerce. This step trips up most first-time applicants; the consulate will not accept an un-attested employer letter.
5. Copy of US Chamber of Commerce membership certificate or business registration for the US employer.
6. Recent color photograph (2x2 inch, white background) and a copy of the US passport biodata page.
7. VFS service-fee receipt and the consular fee paid via the VFS portal.
Tamra prepares the full pack for clients — including the Chamber-attested employer letter — so US applicants only submit at VFS and collect.
03 · Processing & fees
Realistic processing windows and a US-specific fee schedule.
Two pipelines exist in 2026. The Saudi eVisa portal (visa.visitsaudi.com) issues 1-year multiple-entry Business Visit Visas for many nationalities including US citizens, typically in 5–10 business days. The eVisa requires the same MOFA invitation reference but skips the VFS submission. It is now the default for repeat US travelers.
The traditional consular route (VFS Tasheel → Washington DC / New York / LA / Houston consulate) takes 10–20 business days in 2026 and remains the only path for 5-year multiple-entry visas and certain corporate categories.
Fees for US citizens (2026 indicative):
• Single-entry, 30 or 90 days: ~USD 533 visa fee + ~USD 60 VFS service fee.
• 1-year multiple-entry: ~USD 800–1,100 visa fee + ~USD 60 VFS service fee.
• 5-year multiple-entry: ~USD 1,600 visa fee + ~USD 60 VFS service fee.
• Enjazit / MOFA invitation issuance (paid by the Saudi inviter): ~SAR 2,000.
Add 3–5 business days for the Chamber of Commerce attestation of the US employer letter, and 24–48 hours for VFS courier return. Build a two-to-three-week buffer for first-time applications.
04 · What it permits
What US citizens can do on a Business Visit Visa — and what crosses into work-visa territory.
The Business Visit Visa is bounded by activity, not by who pays. A US executive paid from Houston is still working in Saudi Arabia the moment they deliver billable hours on Saudi soil. The activity test is what immigration and MISA enforce.
Permitted: client meetings, vendor calls, partner negotiations, board sittings, M&A diligence visits, exhibitions (LEAP, Saudi Build, Black Hat MEA), conferences, RFP attendance, factory and site visits, supplier audits, contract signing, market research and corporate training received.
Not permitted: billable consulting delivered to a Saudi client, on-site project execution, hands-on technical implementation, paid training delivered to Saudi staff, managing local employees day-to-day, holding a position on a Saudi Commercial Registration, or any activity for which a Saudi entity invoices a Saudi customer with you as the delivering resource.
The misconception that "I'm paid by my US employer, so it's not Saudi work" is the single most common — and most expensive — error among American visitors. The work is happening on Saudi soil; the visa class must reflect it.
05 · Converting to work
If a US citizen needs to deliver paid work in Saudi Arabia, the conversion path is fixed.
Saudi Arabia does not permit in-Kingdom conversion from a Business Visit Visa to a work visa. A US citizen who decides mid-trip to base themselves in Riyadh must exit the Kingdom, run the full work-visa pipeline (block visa → MOFA attestation → US-side document apostille → embassy stamping → GAMCA medical → entry stamp → Iqama issuance), and re-enter on the new work visa.
For US applicants, the document leg includes US State Department apostille of educational certificates, marriage certificates (for dependants) and the FBI background check, followed by Saudi Embassy attestation in Washington DC. GAMCA-approved medical examinations for US-based candidates run through designated clinics in the US.
Realistic timeline from US-side kickoff to Iqama in hand: 8–14 weeks. Tamra runs the full pipeline for American hires under our Saudi sponsorship; the candidate stays in the US until the work visa is stamped, then enters Saudi Arabia once.
Overstay is never the answer. Saudi penalties for overstaying a Business Visit Visa compound daily and trigger re-entry bans of 1–5 years. The inviting Saudi company is also flagged on Qiwa, which jeopardises future visa pulls. Tamra's mobility desk runs calendar overlays for every visa we issue and warns at 14, 7 and 3 days before expiry.
The cheapest mistake an American executive can make with Saudi Arabia is using a tourist e-Visa for business. The expensive mistake is delivering paid work on a Business Visit Visa. The line is not who pays — it is what you do.
No. The Saudi Tourist e-Visa explicitly excludes commercial activity. US citizens attending meetings, signing contracts, or pitching vendors must hold a Business Visit Visa.
The Saudi eVisa portal issues 1-year multiple-entry Business Visit Visas for US citizens in 5–10 business days. The traditional consular route via VFS Tasheel takes 10–20 business days through the Washington DC, New York, Los Angeles or Houston consulates.
A US passport with 6+ months validity, the Enjazit application, the Saudi inviting company's invitation letter with MOFA reference, a US employer cover letter attested by the local US Chamber of Commerce, the US Chamber membership certificate, a recent photograph, and the VFS service-fee receipt.
Yes. Every Saudi Business Visit Visa requires an invitation from a registered Saudi entity with a MOFA-issued invitation reference. US founders without a Saudi entity can be invited by Tamra under our MISA licence.
Approximately USD 800–1,100 in visa fees in 2026, plus a VFS service fee of around USD 60. The Saudi inviter separately pays roughly SAR 2,000 for the Enjazit / MOFA invitation issuance.
No. A Business Visit Visa permits meetings, negotiations and contract signing, not delivery of paid work. Billable consulting, on-site project execution or managing Saudi staff requires a Saudi work visa with Iqama.
No. Saudi Arabia requires the candidate to exit, complete the full work-visa pipeline in the US (US State Department apostille, Saudi Embassy attestation, GAMCA medical) and re-enter on the work visa. Plan an 8–14 week window.
