Saudi Arabia is the fastest-growing expat destination in the GCC. This is Tamra's end-to-end relocation playbook — pre-arrival paperwork, housing, schooling, banking, healthcare, driver's licence, and what makes a Saudi posting succeed for the family, not just the assignee.
The single highest-impact pre-arrival task is document attestation. Saudi Arabia requires every degree, marriage certificate, birth certificate, and police clearance to be apostilled (or chamber + embassy legalised in non-Hague countries) before the visa is filed. Started early, this is a four-week process; started late it adds three months to relocation.
Other pre-arrival tasks: secure CCHI-compliant medical insurance, complete the Saudi medical at a GAMCA-approved clinic in the home country, ship household goods (Saudi Customs requires a packing list in English and Arabic), and book temporary housing for the first 30–60 days.
Riyadh, Jeddah, and the Eastern Province (Dammam/Khobar) are the three primary expat destinations. Riyadh suits corporate roles and government-linked work; Jeddah suits trade, tourism, and Hajj-adjacent business; Khobar suits oil & gas and Aramco-linked employers.
Compounds vs villas: compounds (Diplomatic Quarter and DQ-style sites) provide international schools, gyms, pools, and a more permissive social environment. Standalone villas and apartments are cheaper and increasingly normal, especially in Riyadh's newer districts.
Ejar registration is mandatory — every lease must be filed in the Ejar system, and the contract reference is used for visa addresses, dependant filings, and school enrolment.
Top international schools (American International, British International, Multinational, Lycée Français) have waiting lists of 1–3 years for primary years in Riyadh and Jeddah. Schools require a Saudi-issued Iqama for the parent and child before placement, and admission tests are competitive in years 3+.
Newer schools and second-tier campuses have shorter lists and are an effective fallback. Tamra's family services team maintains a real-time view of capacity across 40+ schools in the three primary cities.
Iqama in hand, the worker opens a personal bank account at one of the major Saudi banks (SNB, Riyad, Al Rajhi, ANB, SAB). Required documents: Iqama, employer salary certificate stamped by the Chamber, Ejar lease, and a SIM card linked to the account for OTP.
Salary must be paid via Mudad (Wage Protection System) into a Saudi bank — payments from abroad or via cheque are non-compliant and trigger Qiwa flags. Premium accounts (mada Pro, Al Rajhi Mokafaa) are worth opening for the airport lounges and waived fees.
Every Iqama holder is covered by CCHI-compliant insurance provided by the employer or sponsor. Tier of policy matters: standard CCHI policies cover GP, ER, and major surgery at network hospitals; ‘VIP’ policies (Bupa Vista, Tawuniya Globe) extend to specialist consultations, dental, optical, maternity, and international evacuation.
Public hospitals (King Faisal Specialist, King Fahd Medical City) and major private chains (Saudi German, Dr. Sulaiman Al-Habib, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi via referral) are the realistic care network. Pharmacies (Nahdi, Al-Dawaa) are open late and stock most Western brands.
Saudi Arabia recognises driving licences from 35+ countries for direct conversion — including the UK, US, EU, GCC, Australia, Canada, India, Pakistan, and most of Southeast Asia. Conversion is a Jawazat (or Absher Individuals) process taking 1 day to two weeks depending on the city.
Without conversion eligibility, a Saudi driving test is required (Riyadh's Dallah, Jeddah's Saudi Driving School). Female drivers have full rights since 2018; learning programmes are extensive and licensed by the Ministry of Interior.
Five practical settling-in issues catch most assignees: Tawakkalna is mandatory for almost every public-facing transaction (download it on day one), Absher is the gateway to nearly all government services (register at the National Address office), prayer times close shops for 15–30 minutes five times daily, weekend is Friday–Saturday, and the cost of living varies dramatically between districts (Diplomatic Quarter Riyadh vs Olaya can be 2x).
Tamra's relocation desk runs a 14-day post-arrival concierge — Iqama collection, Tawakkalna setup, bank account, driver's licence conversion, school enrolment, and household-goods customs clearance — so the assignee can focus on the job from week three.
| Item | Cost band (SAR) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Visa + Iqama + medical + attestation | 18,000–25,000 | Borne by sponsor |
| Compound 2-bed apartment | 110,000–220,000/year | DQ Riyadh upper band |
| Villa (4-bed) outside compound | 140,000–300,000/year | Newer districts |
| International school (primary) | 60,000–120,000/year | Per child |
| Domestic helper sponsorship | 12,000–18,000/year | Plus monthly salary |
| Car (lease) and insurance | 30,000–60,000/year | Reliable mid-segment SUV |
Plan for 90–150 days end-to-end: 30–45 days for attestations and visa, 30 days for arrival and Iqama, 30–60 days for housing, school, and bank. Tamra-managed relocations close 30% faster by parallelising attestation with embassy slot booking.
Yes — once the principal has the Iqama, dependant visas are filed on Muqeem for spouse and unmarried children. Each dependant attends the medical and Jawazat biometrics in country.
Not directly — a dependant Iqama is residency only. To work, the spouse must obtain a separate work Iqama, which can be done in-country via Qiwa transfer without leaving KSA.
Riyadh leads for corporate and government-linked roles, Jeddah for trade and tourism, Khobar for oil & gas. School availability and lifestyle preference often drive the choice more than employer; compound culture is strongest in Riyadh.
Yes — Saudi Arabia consistently scores among the safest countries globally on Numbeo and OECD safety indices. Compound and residential security is comprehensive, and violent crime against expats is extremely rare.
Public schools accept non-Saudi children case-by-case but the curriculum is Arabic-medium and aligns to the Saudi national programme. The majority of expat families opt for international schools.
Yes — dogs and cats are permitted with import paperwork (rabies certificate, microchip, government-issued import permit, microchipped vaccination records). Dogs require additional permission for residential areas; some compounds restrict breeds.
Mudad is the Wage Protection System — payroll must run through Mudad to a Saudi bank for the employer to remain Qiwa-compliant. Mudad failures trigger Qiwa suspensions which freeze visa renewals and transfers.
If issued in one of 35+ recognised countries (UK, US, EU, GCC, Australia, Canada, India, Pakistan, most of SEA), yes — convert at Jawazat. Otherwise a Saudi driving test is required.
Tamra runs a 14-day post-arrival concierge (Iqama, Tawakkalna, bank, driving licence, school, customs), a quarterly family check-in, and an Arabic-fluent contact for school, medical, and government interactions throughout the assignment.
